Job for Hilliary at #54
Radio Repair
There’s a definite pleasure in trying to repair broken equipment. Recently I have started to do the odd electrical repair for an elderly couple down the road. The lady ( Hilliary ) put a request out on the local WhatsApp group to see if someone could replace a bulb socket for her. Not that I am in the group of course, I have avoided use of social media outside of family and work. Having replaced the socket, a week later she requested a ceiling light attachment replacement.
I think she’s testing me. She has just arrived with a defunct radio.
Having tried it and then opened it up I can see that the transformer has gone. There’s no 4.5 voltage coming out. There is a battery compartment at the back, but one of the electrode connections is missing. I taped up a few 1.5 V batteries and it worked perfectly.
So I had a look around and there was a 5V supply for an old battery charger. Perfect. I have just removed the transformer and wired in its placed the cable from the transformer. Some snips and solder get it connected and I just have to cut a small hole to let the cable wire out the back.

The actual tuning section of it doesn’t actually work, so I’ve adjust it to RTE 1.
It seems the going rate for this type of work is a bottle of wine, with the third job free.
